Organizing a solidarity team-building exercise

What is a solidarity team-building exercise?

And what if the future of team-building was a solidarity action? Today, you can create stronger bonds within your teams while effectively helping a non-profit association.

There are many ways of doing this. Working in the field to help volunteers, providing a team response to a problem encountered by nonprofits, for example in the areas of IT, accounting, communications, etc. Each team-building exercise provides an exceptional experience involving sharing ideas and meeting other people. It is also an excellent occasion to help with a real need by providing your services to others as part of a natural extension of our businesses


Some concrete examples

The 29th may 2018, Communication departments of some Saint-Gobain Business Units was gathered for a Pro Bono Marathon day, a solidarity team-building exercise. The aim? Meet an association and provide solutions linked with communication issues.

Two charities were helped on this day by twenty Saint-Gobain communication experts. One group was in charge of improving digital communication of the charity “Parents & Talents”. The second one was helping establish a routes catalog suggested by the charity “Pari Solidari-thé” (solidarity treasure hunts)

Pro Bono Lab, organizer of Pro Bono Marathon interviewed participants. About Saint-Gobain employee, they are 91% thinking they was useful. About charities, they both agreed to say that the expected deliverables are complete, understandable and adapted to their needs.

On a most restricted format, a solidarity team-building exercise took place for the Foundation’s 10th anniversary, at the headquarter “Les Miroirs”, in Paris. In two hours on the lunch time, about sixty employees offered their diverse expertise to nine charities. Each of those has its own issue on which they want to be helped to determine a solving strategy. Missions were diversified such as management of internal organization, recruitment of volunteers or also the creation of an offer generating income. Many variety fitting for every professional profile on a large scale brainstorming.

This event was organized by the Saint-Gobain foundation in partnership with Pro Bono Lab and the participation of these charities: Emmaüs, TILT, Caméléon France, La Maison de Tom Pouce, Clown’Up, Saint-Gobain Solidarités, Entourage, Mots et Regards, Péniche du Coeur.

After survey with participants, 97% of Saint-Gobain employees feel that the event is unifying and stimulate transversality inside the group. About charities, 100% are satisfied of the mission’s results and 71% think that the impact will be positive and sustainable for the charity and its team. Such kind feelings for two hours of rich and intense exchanges.


How to create a solidarity team-building exercise

It is easy. Introduce the concept to your employees and then form a team of people wanting to participate. Define together what you want to achieve: the type of project you want to support, the time you have to devote to it, the skills that you combine, etc.

And then?

Contact either:

 a non-profit association to discuss and agree on an activity corresponding to their needs and your interests. Make sure you take the time to prepare the project with the association.
 an organization that pairs up companies and nonprofits based on their mutual needs. This organization will look after the structure, preparation and project management.

Good to know: you will be covered by the Group’s third-party insurance when you take part in a solidarity team building event.

Contact the associations directly to help them, whether they are nationally or internationally renowned or a local association, near where you live and work and that you know and/or in which you have already been personally involved, or even an association already supported by the Foundation.
